ASEAN-WOAH Rabies Meeting

Header
Background

WOAH has supported the ASEAN in reviewing and updating the ASEAN Rabies Elimination Strategy (ARES) to align with the Global Strategic Plan to end human deaths from dog-mediated rabies by 2030. This is part of the WOAH’s commitment to support ASEAN to improve control of animal diseases and zoonoses as stipulated in the ASEAN-OIE MOU signed in May 2021.

Following the endorsement of the updated ARES by relevant ASEAN bodies, alongside the establishment of the ASEAN Rabies Coordination Group (ARCG), the next step is the development of an ARES Implementation Plan. This plan will detail the activities, responsibilities, and milestones required to achieve rabies elimination across ASEAN member states. An initial draft will be made available for review as it is completed, and a meeting will be held to go through it in depth.

Objectives

  • Develop the ARES Implementation Plan that operationalizes ARES across ASEAN member states.
  • Facilitate Multi-sectoral Collaboration and cooperation among ARCG members, relevant stakeholders, and partners for coordinated rabies control and prevention actions.
  • Define Key Activities and Milestones along with timelines and responsibilities for rabies elimination.
  • Ensure Alignment with Regional and International Frameworks
