Background
As misuse and overuse of antimicrobials can lead to the development of antimicrobial resistance, the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) has established its ANImal antiMicrobial USE (ANIMUSE) Global Database and has been collecting antimicrobial use (AMU) data for almost ten years.
As of January 2025, 89 WOAH Members have used an ANIMUSE Calculation Module and provided information at the veterinary product level, and most have included information on target animal species. Moreover, country data visuals are available in the ANIMUSE country portal for the nearly 160 Members that provide data on an annual basis, providing analyses of antimicrobial quantities, animal biomass and ranking of antimicrobial quantities adjusted by animal biomass.
However, only 30% of Members providing quantities produce an AMU national report, mainly concentrated in Europe.
Supporting our Members: A workshop series
As a first approach to guide and support Members to produce an AMU report for decision-making, WOAH is preparing a set of workshops with selected Members in the region who have contributed to ANIMUSE for at least three years and demonstrated good data quality.
Given this figure has changed for over a decade, and to guide and support Members in developing AMU national reports to support decision-making on AMR, WOAH is launching a series of workshops aimed at the institutionalisation of AMU data collection and reporting.
The first workshop will take place in Bangkok, Thailand on 7-9 May 2025. As mentioned, Members who have participated in contributing to ANIMUSE for at least three years and have consistently demonstrated good data quality will be invited to this workshop.
This meeting is co-financed with the support of the European Union and the United Kingdom’s Fleming Fund.
