East Asia CVOs and contact persons meeting on PPR and LSD

Header

Background

The rapid urbanisation, market growth, increasing income and changes in dietary preferences in the Asia Pacific region not only demand more protein supply for human consumption but also more challenges in the prevention and control of animal diseases such as peste des petits ruminants (PPR) in small ruminants and lumpy skin disease (LSD) in cattle and buffalo.

A recent Regional Steering Committee Meeting of the Global Framework for Transboundary Animal Diseases (GF-TADs) in Tokyo also identified PPR and LSD as priority diseases of the region together with Avian Influenza, Foot and Mouth Disease and African Swine Fever, and other swine diseases. Each sub-region including East Asia also identified the priority actions for the effective and efficient prevention and control of priority diseases.

The fourth East Asia Chief Veterinary Officers (CVOs) and Contact Persons (CPs) meeting in 2020 agreed that China (People’s Republic of), Japan, Korea (Republic of), Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong SAR and Mongolia will form an East Asia CVO Forum to meet at least every two years and nominate East Asia Contact Persons by the CVOs as responsible persons for ongoing coordination, technical information, exchange and reporting to respective CVOs between CVO forum meetings.

Preventing the spread of PPR and LSD requires actions to be harmonised among all members in the region, especially in East Asia where Chinese Taipei and Korea are officially recognised as PPR-free by WOAH, while China, Chinese Taipei and Mongolia officially reported LSD outbreaks.

In this connection, WOAH Regional Representation for Asia and the Pacific (WOAH RRAP) and the China Animal Health and Epidemiology Center, the People’s Republic of China (notably, the WOAH Reference Laboratory for Peste des Petits Ruminants) co-organised the Sub-regional Workshop for PPR and LSD in Qingdao, P.R. China from 24 to 25 July 2023 back-to-back with the Fifth East Asia Chief Veterinary Officers (CVOs) and Contact Persons Meeting on 26 July 2023.

Objectives

  • Sharing global and regional situations of PPR and LSD, including epidemiology, distribution and members’ experience on disease control
  • Strengthen the network and explore potential regional PPR & LSD laboratories collaboration mechanisms among members in the region
  • Enhancing prevention and control capacity on PPR & LSD in East Asia

Participants

More than 30 participants including representatives from China (P.R.), Korea R.O., Japan, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong SAR and Mongolia attended the meeting and discussed national and regional prevention and control of PPR and LSD.
