7th Sub-regional GF-TADs Meeting for the Pacific

Header

The Global Framework for the Progressive Control of Transboundary Animal Diseases (GF-TADs) is a coordinating mechanism promoting synergies in approaches among international agencies, for the control and prevention of TADs and other Emerging Infectious Diseases (EIDs).  Since 2004, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) have cooperated under the GF-TADs initiative, combining both organisations’ strengths in translating the objectives on the ground.

The initiative is built on experiences in the past showing that progress in controlling TADs at the country level is likely to be more successful and sustainable when efforts are part of a coordinated regional and global approach.  The mechanism brings collective action to support the control and eradication of transboundary animal diseases and has yielded several important institutional and operational gains.

The Pacific Community (SPC) is a member of the GF-TADs Regional Steering Committee for Asia and the Pacific. The Animal Health and Production Section of the SPC Land Resources Division (LRD) continues to strengthen the capacity of veterinary diagnostic laboratories, improving national and regional surveillance systems for transboundary animal diseases.

This Sub-regional GF-TADs meeting will review the priority TADs for the Pacific and develop an action plan that is up-to-date and relevant for the Pacific Island countries.

Objectives

  • To provide and share updates on GF-TADs activities in the global, regional and Pacific region
  • To harmonise the Sub-Regional GF-TADs Action Plan with the Pacific Capacity Building Plan as endorsed by the Pacific Ministers of Agriculture & Forestry (MOAFs) and Heads of Agriculture & Forestry (HOAFS) at the 2023 Pacific Week of Agriculture.
  • To strengthen the cooperation and collaboration among FAO, WOAH, SPC, and Pacific Heads of Veterinary and Animal Production Services (PHOVAPS) in protecting the Pacific Island region from TADs.
