9 Mar 2023 (Fiji) – Director General of the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH, founded as OIE) Dr Monique Eloit and Regional Representative for Asia and the Pacific Dr Hirofumi Kugita traveled to Nadi, Fiji to participate in the Pacific Week of Agriculture and Forestry (PWAF) from 9-10 March, organised by the Government of Fiji with support from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Pacific Community (SPC).

In line with its mission, WOAH offered support for Members to improve animal health and welfare, and sought to further develop connections with the animal health sector of the Pacific region. Officials also fielded inquiries about WOAH membership from non-Member states and territories in the region.

The visit was an opportunity to reinforce engagement and networks in-person between WOAH and the Pacific after an extended period of online-only virtual events, due to the pandemic. WOAH officials also developed further connections with the Pacific Heads of Veterinary and Animal Production Services (PHOVAPS), a network of veterinarians, directors, and executive officers of the government livestock industry sector in the Pacific region, to identify potential areas of collaboration.
