Asia Pacific at the 91st General Session

30 May 2024 (France) – The Regional Representation for Asia and the Pacific (RRAP) and the Sub-Regional Representation for South-East Asia (SRR-SEA) prepared presentations, quizzes and prizes for guests and participants of the WOAH 91^st General Session of the World Assembly of Delegates, which took place from 26 to 30 May 2024. These were put together and presented by RRAP and SRR-SEA staff at a “regional kiosk” assembled at the meeting venue, the Maison de la Chimie in Paris, France.

Presentations displayed on monitors at the kiosk showed the history of WOAH in the Asia Pacific region and the South-East Asia sub-region, including facts highlighting work and achievements in supporting and improving animal health. In addition, specific activities were highlighted that have regional and global significance. These were:

Aquatic Animal Health
International Horse Movement Project
Development of ASEAN Transnational Animal Disease (TADs) Strategies
One Health: rabies and post-national bridging workshop initiatives in South-East Asia

Quizzes were prepared for kiosk visitors, to engage them further. These could be taken on mobile phones via QR code, and small prizes from the Asia Pacific were given to those who earned a 100% score. It was reportedly an enjoyable and educational experience for both staff and visitors, and added moments of levity to the overall gathering.

In subsequent days during the 91st General Session, RRAP and SRR-SEA staff also contributed to and supported regional activities kiosks on animal welfare and gender. Key highlights on these topics from the region included:

introduction of the Regional Animal Welfare Strategy (RAWS) for the Asia Pacific, which recently published an action plan
commissioning of a Gender Assessment of Veterinary Services in South-East Asia in 2023, and introduction of a soon-to-be-released new study, “Gender, Disability and Social Inclusion in the Veterinary Services of South-East Asia and the Pacific”
