Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global health concern that affects both human and animal health. It occurs when pathogens such as bacteria develop the ability to resist the drugs used to treat infections, rendering these medications ineffective. The misuse and overuse of antimicrobial drugs in both humans and animals contribute to the emergence and spread of AMR.
In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the need for effective communication strategies to address AMR in human health, animal health and fisheries. Communication plays a vital role in raising awareness among key stakeholders such as human and animal physicians, farmers, policymakers, and the general public about responsible use and practices of antibiotics.
Effective communication strategies can help to promote behavior change by educating target audiences about the impact of AMR on human, animal health and food safety. These strategies aim to empower stakeholders with knowledge and skills to make informed decisions regarding antibiotic use in human and animals.
The Bangladesh Department of Livestock Services (DLS) coordinated with the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), which participated using the AMR Multi Partner Trust Fund Project. With this support, Bangladesh DLS took an important step forward in developing a multisectoral AMR communication strategy through a rigorous consultative process.
The communication strategy was unveiled through a ceremony in the honourable presence of the Secretary, Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock and representatives of the Department of Livestock Services (DLS), Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Directorate General of Drug Administration (DGDA), and Department of Fisheries (DoF).
