OIE Virtual Meeting Series of 23rd SEACFMD National Coordinators

Header

The 22nd meeting of the OIE SEACFMD National Coordinators was held from 25 to 27 June 2019, in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. SEACFMD National Coordinators (NC) from the members (ASEAN countries, China and Mongolia), representatives from neighboring countries/territories, scientists from OIE FMD Reference Laboratories, and research institutes, and experts from international organisations and representatives from private sectors actively participated.

The global and regional FMD situation was thoroughly discussed during the meeting including the maintenance of O/ME-SA/Ind2001 strain in the sub-region, lead similar detection frequencies as the historically endemic strains such as O/SEA/Mya-98 and O/ME-SA/Panasia.

Over the years, SEACFMD NC annual meetings have been a platform for member countries, international partners, and donors to interact, review the progress, and equally importantly share FMD epidemiological situations, challenges, and opportunities associated.

Due to the COVID-19 situation, the NC meeting initially planned in March in Bali, Indonesia had to be postponed. With the extension of the travel and meeting restrictions, there is no guaranty that this meeting could be organized this year. However, animal health, disease monitoring, surveillance, laboratory diagnosis, prevention, and control of the diseases, including FMD, remains a priority for member countries. The OIE SRR SEA would like to maintain the SEACFMD NC platform and facilitate coordination amongst its member countries by organizing virtual meetings.

The first virtual meeting of the SEACFMD NC will focus on the FMD epidemiological situation in South East Asia. Indeed, the analysis of the available data indicates that from January 2019 until March 2020, the prevalent lineages of FMDV include O/SEA/Mya-98, O/ME-SA/Ind-2001, O/ME-SA/Pan Asia, O/Cathay, and A/Asia/Sea-97. Moreover, the significant epidemiological events in 2019 include re-emergence of serotype A in southern Myanmar; and no clinical FMD outbreaks reported in Mongolia.

The 2nd and 3rd session will be dedicated to technical presentation from experts and partners on animal movement, vaccination and PVM, disease modeling, diagnostics, and molecular epidemiology and other researchers. The 4th session will dedicated to discussion of the new SEACFMD Roadmap 2021-2025.

The objectives of this virtual meeting series will be:

  1. to share updated information on FMD epidemiological situation in each FMD endemic countries (detected outbreaks, circulating strains, vaccination status) and key changes in the FMD control policy.
  2. to encourage NC to analyse current and historic (last 5 years preferably) FMD data to study FMD epimiology, trend, patterns.
  3. to gather consensus to establish regular coordination mechanisms in the COVID and post- COVID situation with SECAFMD NC’s.
  4. to identify specific needs for support, triggered by the COVID situation.
