Fifth Virtual Lumpy skin disease (LSD) Coordination Meeting for South-East Asia

Background

Lumpy skin disease (LSD) has recently spread to new regions in Europe and Asia in addition to its traditional range in Africa and the Middle East. Following the first report of Lumpy skin disease (LSD) in Asia in 2019, LSD has continued its spread across continental Asia with many countries in Asia confirming LSD outbreaks. LSD has been introduced in Vietnam and Myanmar in 2020, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Malaysia in 2021, Indonesia in February 2022 and Singapore in March 2022.

In response to these outbreaks in the Asia Pacific region,  WOAH RRAP organised series of webinars to enhance the knowledge and understanding of this emerging disease. Besides, WOAH Sub-Regional Representation for South-East Asia (SRR-SEA) in collaboration with ASEAN Member States and other Partners initiated a number of interventions, including three coordination meetings.

The First Virtual LSD Coordination Meeting for South-East Asia was organised in June 2021 to update countries on LSD  situation and to share available tools for its control. Since vaccination is the most effective tool to prevent and control LSD, the Second LSD Coordination meeting  in December 2021 mainly focused on LSD vaccination.

A Third LSD Coordination Meeting was organised in December 2022 to seek updates on the LSD situation, review the progress on LSD control and discuss the challenges faced by WOAH Members. The Fourth In-Person LSD coordination meeting for South-East Asia was organized on 28 – 30 November 2024 in Bangkok, Thailand focusing on the development of an ASEAN LSD Prevention and Control Strategy.
