Bangkok (Thailand), 31 January 2022 — In preparation for the third African swine fever (ASF) Coordination meeting held on 25 August 2021, the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) Sub-Regional Representation for South-East Asia (SRR-SEA) conducted a survey to understand the status of laboratory capacities and key challenges faced in ASF diagnosis. The online survey questionnaire was completed by 13 Members in South-East Asia plus China, Papua New Guinea and Timor Leste.

The aim of the survey was to understand Members’ existing diagnostic laboratory capacities and challenges faced in ASF diagnosis. Recommendations to enhance ASF diagnostic capacity in the region were also provided in the report by MCs, Reference Laboratories, and partners. The OIE and FAO will closely liaise with Reference Laboratories to come up with an action plan to support MCs in enhancing ASF diagnostic capacity and to strengthen ASF control in the region.
