WOAH Regional Workshop on Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD), Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) and other Priority Transboundary Animal Diseases (TADs) in Asia and the Pacific

Recognising the growing concern regarding the spread of LSD in the Asia-Pacific region and the recent incursion of PPR into Vietnam, the WOAH Regional Representation for Asia and the Pacific (RRAP) organised a workshop on lumpy skin disease (LSD) and peste des petits ruminants (PPR) for the region in Colombo, Sri Lanka, in June 2026. This workshop convened relevant stakeholders from participating WOAH Members in the Asia-Pacific region for an in-person workshop focused on building capacity and strengthening regional collaborations in the prevention and control of LSD, PPR and other TADs.

This workshop was held back-to-back with the 10th SAARC Chief Veterinary Officers (SAARC CVO) Forum on 18 – 19 June 2026.

Objectives

The workshop aimed to:

  • Provide an update on the domestic, regional and global situations of LSD and PPR, reviewing progress made by WOAH Members in controlling these diseases across the region;
  • Strengthen the capacity of Members on surveillance strategies, including approaches for obtaining official disease-free status for PPR and the process of self-declaration of animal health status for LSD;
  • Identify and discuss priority follow-up actions to advance the control of LSD, PPR and other priority TADs, including zoonoses in Asia and the Pacific;
  • Review the progress in the implementation of ALPCS and APPS by ASEAN Member States (AMS) and identify key challenges and priority actions for LSD and PPR control in the ASEAN region over the next 1 – 2 years;
  • Prepare key workshop outcomes relevant for South Asia, which will be presented at the 10th SAARC CVO Forum (18-19 June) for appraisal and the CVOs’ support for implementation.
  • Present key WOAH activities on One Health in South Asia, including zoonoses, AMR, and wildlife health, and discuss a way forward for enhanced engagement on One Health activities.
