WOAH Regional Wildlife Health Network for Asia and the Pacific hosted a webinar, “Wildlife trade: addressing disease risks”

During the networking sessions (report) of the 6th Cycle Training of WOAH Focal Points for Wildlife in Asia and the Pacific with Regional Networking Workshop, February 2023, the WOAH Regional Wildlife Health Network for Asia and the Pacific (WOAH RWHN AP) was established, with WOAH Focal Points for Wildlife being the core members. The network’s purpose is to provide a platform to facilitate effective sharing of information, expertise and advocacy to promote the wildlife health agenda in the Region, with objectives outlined in their terms of reference.

Estimated annual revenue generated by the global legal trade in wildlife (CITES and non-CITES) is USD 220 billion per year.

Wildlife trade was identified as a priority for the region, and participants proposed activities on this theme including risk analysis and risk reduction measures.  The WOAH RWHN AP thus organised the webinar on “Wildlife trade: addressing disease risks”, co-funded by the Japan Trust Fund. We especially thank Members who are represented on the Network Secretariat, for their support in preparation of this event.

This webinar highlighted key aspects of the upcoming “WOAH Guidelines for addressing disease risks in wildlife trade”, providing examples of how the information may be relevant for practical use in risk management throughout the wildlife trade. Members shared examples of risk management strategies which they use in wildlife trade.
