The world has been confronted by the accelerated emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) due to the overuse and misuse of antimicrobial agents. The Tripartite collaboration (FAO/OIE/WHO) “Global Action Plan on AMR” was adopted in 2015 by all countries through decisions in the World Health Assembly (WHA), the FAO’s Governing Conference, and the World Assembly of OIE Delegates. This serves as a strategic framework for Members to develop their action plans (APs) to combat AMR. The strategic objectives in the global action plan are recognised and supported in “The OIE Strategy on Antimicrobial Resistance and the Prudent Use of Antimicrobials” (2016).
Action plans to address AMR were developed in many Members in line with the principles of this global plan. The East Asia Chief Veterinary Officers (CVO) Forum—established in 2016—identified AMR/AMU as a regional priority area for activities. Following the recommendation of the GF-TADs East Asia CVO Forum, this meeting was developed to review implementation of such action plans in animal sectors within East Asia Members.
The virtual meeting “Review implementation of action plans on combatting antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in animal sectors in East Asia” was initiated by an overview presentation from OIE staff before Member representatives within East Asia gave presentations to share updates and success stories. Participants represented animal health sectors from: China (People’s Republic of), Japan, Korea (Republic of), Chinese Taipei and Hong Kong SAR. It was an opportunity for participants to discuss challenges encountered and possible solutions to overcome them. At the close of the discussion, participants prioritised future activities within East Asia.
