The World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) Regional Representation for Asia and the Pacific (RRAP), in collaboration with the Animal Plant Quarantine Agency (APQA) of the Republic of Korea, organized a laboratory training on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) surveillance from 3 to 12 September 2024. This training aimed to enhance participants’ knowledge and skills in AMR susceptibility testing in terrestrial and aquatic food animals, focusing on practical, hands-on experience.
Participants were trained in various testing methods, including the disc diffusion method, broth/medium dilution method, and agar dilution method. They also gained insights into the Korean Veterinary Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System (KVARMS), which offers a model for AMR monitoring that can be adapted to their respective countries.
This training marks an important step in strengthening the region’s capabilities in addressing the global challenge of AMR in foodborne pathogens, ensuring the sustainability and safety of food animal production in Asia.
The primary objective of this training is to enhance participants’ knowledge and proficiency in AMR susceptibility testing, specifically in samples from food animals from hands-on experience. Participants will receive updated information and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for various testing methods. Key techniques to be transferred to laboratory technicians from the target country include, but are not limited to, the disc diffusion method, broth/medium dilution method, and agar dilution method. Additionally, the training will introduce the Korean Veterinary Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System (KVARMS). This system aims to broaden participants’ perspectives on AMR monitoring systems and provide a model that can be adapted or implemented in their respective countries.
This training is in alignment with the WOAH Strategy on AMR and the Prudent Use of Antimicrobials (2022) and contributed to its Objective 2: Strengthen Knowledge through Surveillance and Research and Objective 3: Support Good Governance and Capacity Building.
