One Health is an integrated, transdisciplinary approach to safeguarding health at the human–animal–plant–environment interface. In Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICTs), health threats are uniquely intensified by fragile ecosystems, geographic isolation, and the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution making the One Health approach especially critical for the region.
The Regional Asia Pacific Quadripartite together with the Pacific Community (SPC), Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) organized the first Quadripartite-Pacific Community One Health Workshop in Nadi, Fiji, in August 2024 where PICTs were introduced to Quadripartite’s One Health activities including the One Health Joint Plan of Action (OHJPA), which serves as a blueprint for guiding One Heath actions at all levels (global, regional, national and subnational).
Building on the outcomes and recommendations of the 2024 workshop, this second workshop aimed to sustain momentum on multisectoral coordination, advance implementation of the OHJPA, and strengthen regional advocacy for One Health across the Pacific.
Objectives
The workshop aimed to:
- Raise awareness of One Health issues across the human-animal-environment interface;
- Review the progress and showcase the key achievements made by Member States on One Health, including National One Health Strategies and Frameworks, domestic multisectoral/One Health plans, mainstreaming wildlife and environment sectors and other relevant initiatives;
- Promote knowledge exchange, networking and international partnerships on One Health initiatives among key stakeholders and partners in the region; and
- Prioritize and plan a way forward for scaling-up One Health-related efforts in the region.
Expected outputs
- Increased awareness and better understanding of One Health issues across the human-animal-environment interface.
- Progress, key achievements and lessons learned on One Health in the region highlighted and shared by member states;
- Enhanced networking, partnerships, and coordination among key stakeholders and partners on One Health initiatives in the region; and
- Recommendations developed and activities identified to guide future actions to promote and improve coordination and One Health implementation at the human-animal-wildlife-environment interface at the regional and domestic level.
