Implementing guidelines for aquaculture AMU monitoring: Follow-up in the Philippines

Follow-up WOAH Regional workshop on implementing the guidelines on monitoring of field-level antimicrobial use (AMU) in aquatic animal sector for Asia, in-country implementation, Philippines

Following the WOAH Regional Workshop on Implementing the Guidelines on Monitoring Field-Level Antimicrobial Use (AMU) in the Aquatic Animal Sector for Asia, held on 1–4 December 2025 in Thailand, WOAH organised a follow-up in-country implementation mission with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), Philippines. The mission aimed to support national efforts to strengthen the Philippines’ National Action Plan on AMR. The activity supports WOAH’s global strategy to enhance AMU monitoring across all animal sectors and contributes to broader One Health efforts to address AMR at the regional level.

Funded by the European Union under the Regional Tripartite Working Together to Fight Antimicrobial Resistance in Asia and the Pacific programme, the two-day mission combined technical consultations with field-level pilot testing of the AMU/AMR questionnaire developed during the regional workshop. BFAR officers, WOAH experts, and colleagues from WOAH Headquarters and the Regional Representation for Asia and the Pacific jointly tested the tool across grouper, tilapia, and shrimp hatchery and grow-out systems.

The pilot provided practical insights into data availability, farmers’ reporting capacity, and operational considerations that will inform refinement of the questionnaire to ensure a feasible, reliable, and effective national AMU monitoring system.
