WOAH has established its ANImal antiMicrobial USE (ANIMUSE) Global Database and has been collecting AMU data for ten years. During this decade, nearly 160 Members provide data on an annual basis, with more than 70% of the participants providing the highest reporting option. Each country that participates has access to data visuals in ANIMUSE country portal, providing analysis for the antimicrobial quantities, animal biomass and ranking of antimicrobial quantities adjusted by animal biomass. Despite the good data quality and improvements in reporting, only 30% of the Members providing quantities produce an AMU national report, mainly from Europe. As a first approach to guide and support countries in having an AMU report for the first time for decision-making, WOAH is delivering a set of workshops with selected countries within the region that have contributed to ANIMUSE for at least three years and demonstrated strong quality in their AMU data. Moreover, this aligns with commitments from the 79th United Nations General Assembly political declaration on AMR.
In May 7-9, Institutionalisation of Antimicrobial Use (AMU) Data Collection and Reporting for Asia and the Pacific was organised in Bangkok. Eight countries in Asia were invited to the workshop: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Viet Nam. By attending the workshop, the countries committed to (1) produce an AMU National Report before January 2026; (2) officially share the AMU report with the Minister of Agriculture to inform decisions on the implementation of the National Action Plan on AMR; (3) bring this report to the National Multisectoral coordination mechanism on AMR, provided it has been already set; and (4) maintain the participation to the 2025-2027 rounds of AMU data collection in ANIMUSE, respecting deadlines and enhancing data quality and accuracy.
Following the successful workshop, a follow-up meeting was planned for July 2025 to support countries in preparing their national AMU reports ahead of the January 2026 deadline and to address any questions or concerns they may have during the reporting process.
This meeting was held to share updates after the workshop in May 2025. It addressed questions or concerns participants had during the reporting process. The following were presented:
Consultations were also held clarifying issues related to data analysis or report preparation processes.
