Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a serious threat to both human and animal health in Mongolia and globally. To strengthen awareness and responsible use of antimicrobials across sectors, WOAH, under the AMR Multi-Partner Trust Fund (MPTF) Project, is supporting Mongolia in developing a national AMR communication strategy.
In November 2024, WOAH organised a workshop on AMR communication strategy development, initiating discussion among various sectors on developing a national strategy for AMR. With this initiative, WOAH in collaboration with the General Authority for Veterinary Services (GAVS), Mongolia, and other national organisations such as the Medicine and Medical Devices Regulatory Agency (MMRA), and the Mongolia Ministry of Health is organising a multisectoral technical group meeting to share initial discussions on AMR communication strategy and obtain feedback from relevant stakeholders.
A total of 18 representatives participated in the first multi-sectoral technical meeting on the development of the AMR communication strategy in Mongolia. Participants represented the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry (MoFALI), Ministry of Health (MoH), Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC), General Authority for Veterinary Services (GAVS) under MoFALI, Plant Protection Agency (PPA) under MoFALI, Medicines and Medical Devices Regulatory Agency (MMRA) under MoH, National Center for Communicable Diseases (NCCD) under MoH, Institute of Veterinary Medicine (IVM), School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM) at the Mongolian University of Life Sciences (MULS), Mongolian Private Veterinary Association (MPVA NGO), Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (UN FAO), World Health Organization (WHO), and the Regional Representation for Asia and the Pacific (RRAP) of the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH).
The technical meeting was conducted in Mongolian language, using the most recent Mongolian version of the National AMR Communication Strategy as a reference document. Dr Batsaikhan Sodnom, WOAH National Consultant, introduced the objectives and expected outcomes of the meeting, providing a brief overview of the strategy’s development process.
Participants agreed to review the communication strategy page by page. Active discussions took place regarding its entire structure, resulting in many amendments and recommendations to merge and simplify sections and terms. After much feedback was collected, references were provided on similar existing Mongolian strategies, to align format and tone. It was noted however, that the current version of the strategy contained sufficient content and that no additional sections were needed.
The meeting concluded in agreement that a second multisectoral technical meeting should be convened, tentatively scheduled for the end of May 2025, to finalize the revised strategy. The group agreed that having the same participants in the follow-up meeting would be beneficial for continuity and finalisation of the strategy.
