Prevention and control of neglected parasitic zoonoses

Header

Asia-Pacific Tripartite webinar on prevention and control of neglected parasitic zoonoses

Neglected parasitic zoonoses are caused by parasites such as Taenia solium, Trichinella, Echinococcus and Fasciola. They continue to pose significant burdens and affect livelihoods of  vulnerable populations, particularly smallholder famers, that typically have limited access to adequate sanitation, basic living conditions, health and veterinary services and awareness. Many of the neglected parasitic zoonoses are also foodborne. Disease or loss of animals due to zoonoses affect food security and the livelihoods of millions of people in poor communities.

Recognising the disease burden and critical importance of a multi-sectoral approach to control and eliminate neglected foodborne parasitic zoonoses in Asia, in October 2018, the Regional Tripartite, consisting of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH, founded as OIE) and World Health Organization (WHO) in the Asia-Pacific region organised a regional meeting to accelerate prevention and control of neglected foodborne parasitic zoonoses. Following the meeting, the organisations continued to collaborate to enhance multisectoral partnerships at the country level. This includes developing a series of guidance and tools targeting medical and public health practitioners, veterinary practitioners and food safety authorities. These resources may be used by countries for advocacy and to implement risk communication, disease mapping and public and veterinary health interventions for the prevention and control of such diseases.

This event provided an opportunity to discuss

how our tools can be used to catalyse sustainable multi-sectoral coordination mechanisms to ensure that interventions reach affected populations.

Our webinar, organised by the Regional Tripartite, presented an orientation on new guidance and tools targeting relevant sectors. It provided an opportunity to discuss how these tools can catalyse sustainable multi-sectoral coordination mechanisms to ensure that interventions reach affected populations. Our aim is to accelerate the control and elimination of neglected parasitic zoonoses across the Asia-Pacific Region.
