Bangkok (Thailand), 9 February 2021 – On 8 February 2021, Thailand reported a Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) outbreak in goats imported from Western Africa at Bufai, Prachantakham, Prachin Buri province. Details are available here.

In the past years, PPR has been reported in most countries of South Asia, as well as in China and Mongolia. For the first time, PPR is reported in South-East Asia. This first occurrence of PPR in South East-Asia raises concerns and threat to the sub-region and more widely.

PPR is a viral disease, caused by a morbillivirus closely related to rinderpest virus, which affects goats, sheep, and some wild ruminants. Live attenuated PPR vaccines are available, which can induce life-long immunity against all the lineages of PPR viruses.
