Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a threat to human, animal, and environmental health, both globally and in the Philippines. Various efforts have been undertaken in the country to address AMR. In 2014, the Government of the Philippines established the Inter-Agency Committee on Antimicrobial Resistance (ICAMR), led by the Department of Health and co-led by the Department of Agriculture. This committee facilitated the development of the Philippines National Action Plan (PNAP).
Awareness-raising activities have been implemented under the iAMResponsible campaign, launched in 2018. These efforts have primarily targeted students, farmers, and veterinarians, in line with the PNAP. While the campaign provides a framework and consistent branding for outreach to other stakeholders, its reach has been limited by inconsistent financial resources.
In this context, the engagement of the private sector could be further strengthened under the iAMResponsible campaign. The private sector holds significant influence in shaping practices related to antimicrobial use and can serve as a valuable partner in promoting responsible behaviour and supporting AMR mitigation efforts. The Bureau of Animal Industry (Veterinary Services) acknowledges the role of the private sector by developing a pledge to recognise its contribution and to reinforce collaboration between government and private stakeholders. A signing ceremony will be held to promote the pledge and the efforts undertaken by private sector to mitigate AMR. The ceremony is organise under the Regional AMR Project: Working together to fight Antimicrobial Resistance, funded by the European Union.
