Reporting – Focal Point for Aquatic Animals

Header

Your role in reporting

The Focal Point for Aquatic Animals supports the WOAH Delegate and the Focal Point for Animal Disease Notification in meeting the Member’s reporting obligations for aquatic animal diseases under Articles 1.1.3, 1.1.4 and 1.1.5 of the Aquatic Animal Health Code. All reporting is carried out under the authority of the Delegate.

In Asia and the Pacific, the Focal Point for Aquatic Animals is also the main reporter for Regional Aquatic Animal Disease (RAAD) reporting, which covers non-listed aquatic animal diseases.

For what each report covers across all Focal Points, see Reporting to WOAH: what, when and where.

Main reporting responsibilities

* WOAH does not prescribe which Focal Point submits aquatic disease reports in WAHIS: each Member decides whether they are submitted by the Focal Point for Aquatic Animals, by the Focal Point for Animal Disease Notification, or shared between them. WAHIS access can be restricted by animal category, so a Focal Point for Aquatic Animals can be given access to aquatic animal diseases only.

Voluntary reporting

Report When Your responsibility Where Procedure
Article 1.1.5 notifications Ad hoc Primary or shared with the Focal Point for Animal Disease Notification* WAHIS Support Desk Article 1.1.5

Article 1.1.5 covers, for example, a WOAH-listed aquatic disease in a farmed host species outside the Code case definition, or a non-listed disease of note in farmed aquatic animals. In wild aquatic animals, both are shared through WildEpi.

RAAD reporting (Asia and the Pacific)

RAAD collects quarterly information on non-listed aquatic animal diseases of importance to Asia and the Pacific. It runs alongside WAHIS: WOAH-listed aquatic diseases are reported through WAHIS, not through RAAD.

  • Each quarter, complete the RAAD Excel reporting form and send it by email to the WOAH Regional Representation for Asia and the Pacific: [email protected].
  • Diseases of emerging regional concern that are not yet on the RAAD list can also be reported.
  • For the current reporting form, or any questions about RAAD, contact [email protected].

RAAD dashboard: a RAAD dashboard is currently being developed and will be published soon, with data from reports submitted from 2021 onwards.

WOAH does not prescribe which Focal Point submits which report: each Member decides how reporting is shared between its Focal Points. WAHIS access can be restricted by animal category (terrestrial or aquatic), but not by report type.

Immediate notifications are due within 24 hours of confirmation. The clock starts when the disease is confirmed, not when the information reaches the Focal Point who submits the report. Where the Focal Point for Animal Disease Notification submits aquatic reports – for example, because the Focal Point for Aquatic Animals does not have WAHIS access – aquatic findings should be shared with them straight away.

Focal Point for Animal Disease Notification

  • Aquatic animal disease reports in WAHIS – immediate notifications, follow-up reports and the aquatic six-monthly report – may be submitted by the Focal Point for Aquatic Animals, by the Focal Point for Animal Disease Notification, or shared between them. With their own WAHIS access for aquatic animals, the Focal Point for Aquatic Animals can report aquatic data directly.
  • The annual report covers terrestrial and aquatic animals in one report. The Focal Point for Aquatic Animals contributes the aquatic data, while the report is usually submitted by the Focal Point for Animal Disease Notification.

Focal Point for Wildlife

  • All aquatic animals, including wild ones, fall under aquatic reporting. Marine mammals are the exception: they are terrestrial animals for reporting purposes, handled by the Focal Point for Animal Disease Notification with the Focal Point for Wildlife.
  • Non-listed diseases in wild aquatic animals can be shared through WildEpi, in collaboration with the Focal Point for Wildlife.
