2023 Lab Training: AMR Surveillance in Terrestrial and Aquatic Food Animals

Header

Laboratory Training on AMR Surveillance in Terrestrial and Aquatic Food Animals: Republic of Korea and Japan

Background

In Asia, the growing population followed by increased demand for animal-source food is causing intensification of food-producing animals and use of antimicrobial agents in various production systems. As a result, Asia is considered as a hot spot of antimicrobial use (AMU) in animal health and production sector. Strengthening surveillance and monitoring of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and promoting more prudent AMU in compliance with international standards is the key to curb the emergence of AMR in foodborne pathogens.

The World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) Regional Representation for Asia and the Pacific (RRAP), in collaboration with the WOAH Collaborating Centres and with other lead AMR laboratories, has been engaged in capacity-building activities for the national/central laboratories for AMR for several years. These activities – in-person meetings and hands-on practical training courses – had a significant impact on technology transfer and regional networking among experts and technicians before the COVID-19 pandemic.

After a few years’ pause in physical interaction, and with movement restrictions lifted and the pandemic situation eased, there was strong interest and need among both beneficiaries and potential trainers in resuming practical training for AMR laboratories in the Asia Pacific region.

Objectives

This training aimed to improve laboratory capacity for AMR surveillance in food
animals in the target country(-ies). To this end, the training shared the most updated manuals of advanced AMR laboratories of the region with the trainees, providing them with practical tips for implementation. It was also taken as an opportunity to strengthen the regional AMR laboratory network and facilitate the exchange of information, experience, and lessons learned among all participants, including both trainers and trainees.
