2023 Lab Training: AMR Surveillance in Terrestrial and Aquatic Food Animals

Header

Laboratory Training on AMR Surveillance in Terrestrial and Aquatic Food Animals: Republic of Korea and Japan

Background

In Asia, the growing population followed by increased demand for animal-source food is causing intensification of food-producing animals and use of antimicrobial agents in various production systems. As a result, Asia is considered as a hot spot of antimicrobial use (AMU) in animal health and production sector. Strengthening surveillance and monitoring of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and promoting more prudent AMU in compliance with international standards is the key to curb the emergence of AMR in foodborne pathogens.

The World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) Regional Representation for Asia and the Pacific (RRAP), in collaboration with the WOAH Collaborating Centres as well as other lead AMR laboratories, has been engaged in the capacity building activities for the national/central laboratories of AMR in the past several years. The face-to-face meetings and hands-on practical training courses had significantly impacted the technology transfer and regional networking among the experts and technicians before the COVID-19 pandemic.

After a few years’ pause of such physical interaction and under the lifted movement restrictions and eased situation, there are strong interests and needs by the beneficiaries as well as the potential trainers in resuming the practical trainings for AMR laboratories in the Region.

Objectives

The expected outcome of this training is the improved laboratory capacity for AMR surveillance in food
animals in the target country(-ies). To this end, the proposed training aims to share the most updated manuals of the advanced AMR laboratories of the region with the trainees and provide them practical tips for implementation. It is also taken as an opportunity for creating and/or reinforcing the regional AMR laboratory network and facilitate the exchange of information, experiences, and lessons learned among all the participants including both trainers and the trainees.
