Safe and effective carcass disposal

Many transboundary animal diseases are endemic in the region and threat remains of emerging and remerging diseases, natural disasters. The approach to carcass disposal is advoc basis and matter of circumstance not fully integrated into disease control, eradication or preparedness strategy.

The mass disposal of dead animals associated with an animal disease outbreak is often subject to intense public and media scrutiny thereby obligating the Veterinary Authority of a Member Country to not only conduct disposal operations within acceptable scientific principles to destroy the pathogenic agent but also to address public and environmental concerns.

WOAH has conducted feasibility studies in the Philippines (2022) and Malaysia (2023). The objective of the study was reviewing existing methods and assess technical, economic, policy, environmental, and sociocultural feasibility of more effective methods, identify current practices, attitudes, gaps, and opportunities in carcass management.  The  study reports provided practical, relevant, and feasible recommendations for safe and effective carcass disposal. WOAH also organised stakeholder consultation and introductory training on animal mortality management in Timor Leste(2022).
