Sri Lanka: IHR-PVS National Bridging Workshop (NBW)

23 Feb 2023 (Sri Lanka) – The World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH, founded as OIE) Regional Representation for Asia and the Pacific (RRAP), together with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) supported the Ministries of Health and Agriculture of Sri Lanka in organising the International Health Regulations and Performance of Veterinary Services (IHR-PVS) National Bridging Workshop (NBW) in Sri Lanka from 21-23 February 2023.

Participants developed a joint roadmap

to improve and strengthen collaborative work addressing health threats at the animal-human-environment interface.

A total of 72 participants, representing the national, provincial, district and divisional levels from the Ministry of Health, Department of Animal Production and Health (DAPH) under Ministry of Agriculture, and representatives  from Ministry of wildlife and forest resource conservation, Ministry of Fisheries, Ministry of Environment and Police attended the workshop held at Waskaduwa, Sri Lanka. Over the three days, the workshop facilitated participants in reviewing current collaboration gaps in areas of zoonoses, AMR, food safety and other health risks. From this review, they developed a joint roadmap to improve and strengthen collaborative work addressing health threats at the animal-human-environment interface.

Outputs of the workshop clearly showed that much needs to be done to strengthen intersectoral coordination and collaboration between key sectors and agencies for better prevention, preparedness, and response to zoonoses, AMR, food safety and other health threats. A “One Health roadmap” developed by participants included key activities that enhance intersectoral coordination for addressing One Health threats in Sri Lanka. The roadmap is expected to be used by policy makers for strategic investments and corrective measures in strengthening intersectoral coordination and collaboration in addressing zoonoses and other health threats.

WOAH RRAP together with its quadripartite partners plan to closely follow up with the One Health stakeholders in Sri Lanka to support implementation of the planned roadmap activities.
