Training workshop on farm-level biosecurity assessment in small-scale aquaculture

Background

Effective on-farm biosecurity is essential for preventing the introduction and spread of pathogens in aquaculture systems. Strengthening biosecurity measures at the farm level not only reduces the risk of disease outbreaks but also minimizes reliance on antimicrobial treatments, supporting a sustainable approach to mitigating antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in aquaculture. Recognising its significance, the Steering Committee of the Asia-Pacific Aquatic Animal Health Network (AP AquaNet) identified farm-level biosecurity in small-scale aquaculture as a priority area during its 2023 meeting.

To advance biosecurity implementation, a comprehensive assessment of current practices is necessary to identify gaps and provide targeted recommendations for improvement. In response, the project “Assessment of farm-level biosecurity implementation in small-scale aquaculture farms in the Asia-Pacific region” was initiated. This project focuses on training members to use a standardised questionnaire as a tool for evaluating biosecurity practices, offering feedback, and supporting farmers in enhancing their farm-level biosecurity.

As part of these efforts, WOAH Regional Representation for Asia and the Pacific organised the training workshop on farm-level biosecurity assessment in small-scale aquaculture in Bangkok, Thailand, on 6 – 9 May 2025. This four-day training workshop equipped participants with the skills to use a standardised questionnaire as a quantitative assessment tool for evaluating biosecurity practices on small-scale aquaculture farms. Five selected countries, with four representatives each, were invited to participate. Facilitators guided participants in developing a study design and data collection plan, ensuring they could effectively implement the assessment in their respective countries. Additionally, a site visit provide hands-on experience in administering the questionnaire in a real farm setting, reinforcing practical application of the training.

Objectives

  1. To train country representatives on how to use the questionnaire as a tool for assessing biosecurity practices on small-scale aquaculture farms.
  2. To demonstrate the practical application of the questionnaire for data collection and providing actionable feedback to farmers through a site visit.
  3. To encourage participating countries to adopt the questionnaire for ongoing assessments and promote continuous improvement in biosecurity practices on aquaculture farms.
