The World Organisation for Animal Health’s (WOAH) Wildlife Health Framework “Protecting wildlife health to achieve One Health” has become the basis of WOAH’s Global Strategy on Wildlife Health. Disease surveillance and reporting in wildlife is recognised as important for monitoring health situations that may be pertinent for disease in wildlife, livestock and people. The new WOAH WAHIS system was created in 2020 to make animal health information more accessible, to make reporting easier for Members, and to enable user-friendly data visualisation. A training webinar on “WAHIS-Wild-Beta: WOAH Worldwide monitoring system for wild animal diseases” was organised by WOAH headquarters for Members globally in February 2023.
The regional training in February 2024 highlighted key aspects of the role of WOAH Focal Points for Wildlife, particularly responsibilities relating to surveillance and reporting of disease in wildlife. The training was offered to key contacts involved in wildlife disease surveillance and reporting in Asia and the Pacific, including WOAH Focal Points for Wildlife and WOAH Focal Points for Animal Disease Notification. Participants had the opportunity to clarify any doubts on the use of the WAHIS-Wild Beta system of disease reporting for wildlife.
Discussion points included clarification of reporting high pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI) in wild birds and mammals. After the training, many participants were confident in their ability to share information on non-WOAH listed diseases.
The training was prepared and provided by the World Animal Health Information and Analysis Department (WAHIAD), with support from the Preparedness and Resilience Department (PRD) and Data Integration Department (DID), at WOAH headquarters.
