Training of Trainers (ToT) Workshop on Humane Killing of Animals for Disease Control

Background

The World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), in collaboration with its partners, supports Members in strengthening National Veterinary Services to implement Animal Welfare standards. Under the Global Animal Welfare Strategy (2017), the Regional Animal Welfare Strategy (RAWS) for Asia, the Far East and Oceania (AFEO) guides efforts to improve knowledge and application of animal welfare across a region home to over half the world’s population of people and animals.

In recent years, the AFEO region has faced major Transboundary Animal Diseases (TADs), notably the spread of African Swine Fever (ASF) since 2018. As countries rebuild pig populations, there is an opportunity to train Members on WOAH standards for animal welfare—specifically, Chapter 7.6 on the killing of animals for disease control and Chapter 7.13 on pig production systems.

This training is part of the WOAH–International Coalition for Animal Welfare (ICFAW) project to enhance implementation of Animal Welfare standards in South-East Asia, with technical support from the University of Melbourne (a WOAH Collaborating Centre for Animal Welfare). The activities are funded by WOAH with financial support from Open Philanthropy.

Objectives of the ToT courses:

1. Strengthen national capacities in Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand, and Vietnam to implement WOAH animal welfare standards related to the killing of animals for disease control purposes (Chapter 7.6) and animal welfare in pig production systems (Chapter 7.13)
2. Develop a cadre of national trainers equipped with both technical knowledge and training delivery skills (Pedagogical) to train others.
3. Foster sustainable learning through cascading training programmes within national Veterinary Services and beyond.
4. Promote regional collaboration and harmonised implementation of animal welfare practices.
5. Develop a cadre of national trainers equipped with both technical knowledge and training delivery skills (Pedagogical) to train others.
