Animal welfare, a complex issue with scientific, ethical, and societal dimensions, is a global priority. WOAH, the World Organisation for Animal Health, plays a crucial role in safeguarding animal health and welfare worldwide. 

WOAH is organising a Regional Workshop for WOAH National Focal Point for Animal Welfare in Asia-Pacific 2025, 21 – 23 January 2025, in Tokyo, Japan.

WOAH National Focal Points for Animal Welfare are key to implementing WOAH Standards and Guidelines. This regional workshop aims to enhance their capacity and knowledge, addressing the unique challenges and opportunities in the Asia-Pacific region. By providing guidance, technical assistance, and fostering collaboration, WOAH supports humane animal treatment and adherence to animal welfare standards. 

The workshop will facilitate discussions on achievements, experiences, challenges and solutions related to implementing WOAH Standards and Guidelines, aligning with WOAH’s global and regional strategies. 

WOAH plays a crucial role in safeguarding global animal health and welfare. WOAH National Focal Points for Animal Welfare are key players in implementing WOAH Standards and Guidelines for animal welfare at all levels. To enhance their capacity and knowledge, this regional workshop is essential for addressing the unique challenges and opportunities in the Asia-Pacific region.

Objectives

Workshop objectives:  

  1. To increase understanding and awareness of animal welfare issues and facilitate networking among WOAH Focal Points for Animal Welfare
  2. To provide actionable steps to implement animal welfare activities in their countries/territories, aligned with WOAH Standards and Guidelines as well as RAWS
  3. To ensure that WOAH Focal Points for Animal Welfare have the necessary information to participate in WOAH standard-setting processes, including commenting on draft chapters
  4. To discuss achievements, experiences, and challenges in implementing WOAH Standards and Guidelines for animal welfare, and
  5. To raise understanding and visibility of the role of the Collaborating Centre and the Collaborating Centre Network.
