The World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) Regional Representation for Asia and the Pacific (RRAP), in collaboration with the WOAH Collaborating Centre for Food Safety, Rakuno Gakuen University (RGU) and the WOAH Collaborating Centre for Diagnosis and Control of Animal Diseases and Related Veterinary Product Assessment in Asia, the National Veterinary Assay Laboratory (NVAL), Japan, has been engaged in capacity-building activities for the national/central laboratories of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) over the past several years.
In Asia, growing populations followed by increased demand for animal-source food are driving intensification of food-producing animals and the use of antimicrobial agents in various production systems. As a result, Asia is considered a hot spot for antimicrobial use (AMU) in animal health and production. Strengthening surveillance and monitoring of AMR and promoting more prudent AMU in compliance with international standards is the key to track and control the emergence of AMR in foodborne pathogens.
The objectives of these trainings include:
These training courses serve as a foundation for understanding AMR laboratory methodologies, offering participants essential theoretical knowledge alongside hands-on experience. In addition to technical skills, the courses may also include lectures on surveillance systems and antimicrobial susceptibility testing, ensuring a comprehensive learning experience.
We are organising a training along these lines this July 2025 in Ebetsu, Hokkaido, Japan. For details, see below and the linked programme.
