World Veterinary Day

Gender Awareness Raising Webinar in Asia and the Pacific

Header

Why should Veterinary Services consider gender in their work?

Countries in South-East Asia and the Pacific have legal frameworks to promote inclusivity, yet economic and institutional barriers hinder equal participation, affecting sectors like Veterinary Services.

Recent studies commissioned by WOAH in 2023 and 2024, and supported by Australia’s DFAT, show a growing number of women in animal health. However, sector policies and practices have yet to fully integrate gender considerations. Without change, the industry risks losing skilled professionals.

To celebrate World Veterinary Day in 2025, WOAH invited representatives of the Veterinary Services in the Asia Pacific and all relevant partners in the region to a webinar which aimed to raise awareness on why Veterinary Services should consider gender in their work.

The webinar was open to everyone willing to learn more on gender issues and how they may apply to Veterinary Services and the Animal Health sector.

Objectives

  • To provide general knowledge on gender and why it should be considered important to Veterinary Services
  • To provide a platform for sharing experiences and lessons learned from countries/territories and partners on the implementation of gender policies in Veterinary Services
  • To gather practical recommendations implementable by Veterinary Services to improve gender inclusion
