With a mortality rate of up to 90%, PPR can have serious socio-economic consequences. However, the risk related to PPR has not been assessed in Southeast Asia. Recognising the need to be better prepared for PPR, the ASEAN Sectoral Working Group for Livestock (ASWGL) in 2019 nominated Thailand and Indonesia as lead countries to guide the ASEAN work on PPR. Considering the risk of PPR introduction in the ASEAN region, the ASWGL agreed to develop an ASEAN PPR Preparedness Strategy.
WOAH has supported the ASEAN Member States (AMS) to prevent, prepare and respond to PPR by organising the training of key staff from national veterinary services on PPR, carrying out the PPR risk assessment and the development of the ASEAN PPR Preparedness Strategy.
The draft ASEAN PPR Preparedness Strategy is being developed to enhance early warning and early reaction to the PPR incursion in the respective countries and ASEAN region. The ASEAN PPR Preparedness Strategy aligns with the Global GF-TADs Strategy 2021-2025, PPR Global Eradication Programme, Global Strategy for the Control and Eradication of PPR and PMAT tools; as well as findings of the risk assessments.
