Antimicrobial Resistance

Awareness Raising on Antimicrobial Usage at the Farm Level

Header

Background

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global threat to animal, human and environment health. Misuse and overuse of antimicrobials in animals contribute significantly to the development of resistant microorganisms. Addressing AMR requires a One Health approach, where veterinarians play a crucial role in ensuring responsible and prudent use of antimicrobials.

The World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) strongly advocates for responsible and prudent use of antimicrobials in animals, aiming at safeguarding both animal and human health through a One Health approach. WOAH also urges an end to using antimicrobials for growth promotion. WOAH’s guidelines are anchored in its core standards: Terrestrial Animal Health Code and Aquatic Animal Health Code.

Veterinary students are among the key stakeholders targeted by WOAH in its communication efforts, as their future behaviours as animal health professionals can significantly impact antimicrobial use (AMU). To strengthen antimicrobial stewardship among future veterinarians, it is essential to provide them with practical knowledge and real-world exposure to AMU. In collaboration with WOAH and Chiang Mai University, the Department of Livestock Development will organise a field visit for veterinary students nearing graduation. This initiative aims to raise awareness and bridge the gap between academic learning and field implementation, equipping students with the skills needed to promote responsible AMU and contribute to the fight against antimicrobial resistance.

Objectives

  • To draw the attention of future professionals towards the importance of AMR and to expose students to real-life practices related to antimicrobial usage in veterinary settings
  • To understand the decision-making process for antimicrobial prescription in farms
  • To observe biosecurity
  • To engage with veterinary professionals and discuss antimicrobial stewardship challenges
  • To reinforce responsible AMU aligned with national and international guidelines (e.g., WOAH)
