Antimicrobial Resistance and the Pacific: A One Health and Wildlife Health issue

The WOAH Pacific Wildlife Health Network (PWHN) held its 9th meeting on the 9th December 2025. The meeting was attended by representatives from Australia, Cook Islands, New Caledonia, New Zealand, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, Timor Leste, SPC and WOAH.

The meeting included the following agenda points:

The meeting focused on the topic of Antimicrobial Resistance and the Pacific: A One Health and Wildlife Health issue selected by members of the network. The meeting featured three experts in this field who were invited to deliver presentations outlined below:

• Dr Samantha Ellis – Senior Veterinary Officer, OCVO, Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Forestry “Antimicrobial Resistance: A One Health issue”
• Dr Anthony Keyburn – Group Leader Diagnostics & Avian Disease Research, Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness (ADCP) “Antimicrobial Resistance in Wildlife: A One Health Perspective for the Pacific”
• Prof Michelle Power – Professor, School of Natural Sciences, Macquarie University “One Health and Antimicrobial Stewardship – Why wildlife matters”

The 10th meeting for the PWHN will be scheduled in 2026 with a topic chosen from ideas previously put forward by participants.
