Transboundary Animal Diseases

Second PPR webinar for Asia and the Pacific

Second peste des petits ruminants (PPR) webinar for Asia and the Pacific

Background

Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is a highly infectious transboundary animal disease (TAD) that has been endemic in South Asia for many years but has not been reported in several countries in the South-East Asia, East Asia and Pacific sub-regions. The recent incursion of PPR into Vietnam has raised concerns about the potential for cross-border spread to neighbouring countries, underscoring the importance of strengthening early preparedness and coordinated response mechanisms across the Asia-Pacific region.

It is in this context that the WOAH Regional Representation for Asia and the Pacific (RRAP) and Sub-Regional Representation for South-East Asia (SRR-SEA) organised a PPR Webinar for countries in Asia and the Pacific on 16 January 2026. The webinar focused primarily on PPR preparedness and emergency response and was organised in response to Members requests and urgent need for information on the global and regional PPR situation. It also aimed to facilitate access to relevant materials and tools to support Members in preventing the incursion and further spread of PPR to other countries and territories.

Objectives

Building from the momentum created by the first webinar, which was attended by approximately 130 policymakers and field officers representing Members in the Asia Pacific region as well as WOAH, a follow-up webinar focused on PPR control measures with the following objectives:

  • Provided Members with knowledge on PPR vaccines and emergency control measures, and the importance of post-vaccination monitoring
  • Presented the assessment of WOAH Members’ laboratory diagnostic capacity for PPR

Participants

This meeting brought together leading experts, policymakers, and partners from the Asia Pacific region.
