Pig production is the fastest growing animal species in the livestock industry besides poultry. Asia contributes to more than half of the global pig supply (56%) and the number of pigs raised globally (60 %). Since 2014, OIE RRAP in collaboration with FAO has organized two regional workshops on swine disease prevention and control and the workshop identified the lack of well-trained technical staff as the main constraint on swine disease prevention and control and suggested OIE Reference Centres continue their involvement and support of regional capacity building activities, especially on laboratory diagnosis and disease control measures.
As part of the action response to improve capacity building on swine disease control in the Asian Pacific region, the OIE RRAP in collaboration with China Animal Disease Control Center (CADC), the OIE Reference Laboratory for porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) organize series of laboratory hands-on training to regional Members since 2015.
As a follow-up to the previous hands-on training, the Regional Virtual Training on Swine Disease Laboratory Diagnosis was held by OIE RRAP in collaboration with the OIE Reference Laboratory (RL) for PRRS in Beijing on 3-4 November 2020. This two-day virtual training focused on
Laboratory professionals working on swine disease diagnosis in government laboratories nominated by the OIE Delegate in Chinese Taipei, Indonesia, Japan, Korea RO, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam participated in the training.
