Strengthening the surveillance and control of animal diseases
Asia and the Pacific region is a culturally, geographically, socially, linguistically and economically diverse region. Of all the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH, founded as OIE) regions, it has the largest human and animal populations and animal protein resources. There have been outbreaks of important infectious and contagious animal diseases. The organisation’s Regional Representation for Asia and the Pacific (RRAP) is committed to provide regionally-adapted services to all regional members to strengthen the surveillance and control of animal diseases, not only within each country but also for the region. Our Sub-regional Representation in South East Asia (SRR-SEA) aims to strengthen its involvement in policy design and good governance in animal health systems and veterinary services of member countries. By facilitating the exchange of scientific knowledge and providing technical support and advice, SRR-SEA promotes animal health welfare, coordinates animal disease control programs particularly SEACFMD and rabies, and strengthen the performance of veterinary services in South East Asia. Close collaboration with Regional and Sub-regional offices, WOAH Headquarters and the Regional Commission for Asia, the Far East and Oceania facilitates the practical implementation of the organisation’s objectives.
Aquaculture is still the fastest growing food-producing sector in the world. The Asia and Pacific region has dominated global aquaculture production, both in quantity and value. However, the rapid growth of this sector brings with it risks, which are compounded by the increasingly globalized trade in live aquatic animals and their products.
Our organisation assists its members in Asia and Pacific region for better management of aquatic animal health and welfare through the Performance of Veterinary Services (PVS) pathway and associated initiatives, Quarterly Aquatic Animal Disease Report, activities under the Regional Collaboration Framework on Aquatic Animal Health, seminars for organisational Focal Points for Aquatic Animals, and other related workshops.
RRAP collaborates and cooperates closely with the Network of Aquaculture Centres in Asia and Pacific Region (NACA), and dissemination of QAAD serves as an early warning system for some emerging diseases of worldwide significance and facilitates establishment of national and regional Aquatic Animal Health surveillance system.
A Framework focused on building a framework of actors to strengthen laboratory capacity for aquatic animal disease activities in Asia and the Pacific and information sharing among WOAH Reference Centres and Member Countries regarding aquatic animal health issues.
A platform for sharing training materials and scientific information on aquatic animal health.
