World Rabies Day (WRD), held every year on 28 September, is a day of action for WOAH Members and partners to raise awareness and advocate for rabies elimination regionally and beyond. In 2025, we celebrate the 19th World Rabies Day with a theme focusing on individual action and community organising to win the fight against rabies.
The theme this year (as set by WOAH partner the Global Alliance for Rabies Control, or GARC) is “Act Now: You, Me, Community”, emphasising the power of taking individual action, leading by example, and working with communities to take responsibility, work together, and drive real change. A banner offered for use is available for download here and is displayed below.
means whether you are an individual, part of an organisation, or a decision-maker, the time to act is today.

This year, WOAH RRAP and SRR-SEA representation offices supported an online event on 29 September, “Youth Against Rabies: Regional dialogue on rabies elimination” which empowered young people to recognise rabies, take preventive action, and mobilise their communities for a rabies-free future.
The event focused on helping viewers understand what rabies is, how to recognise it, and why early action matters. Sessions included practical steps for dog-bite prevention, first aid, and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). It also explored how youth can play a key role in dog vaccination drives and awareness campaigns, and included powerful real-stories from young rabies advocates and champions.
On our regional website, we will also continually publish stories on efforts by WOAH Members as examples of how to take steps towards rabies elimination following this year’s theme, “Act Now: You, Me, Community”. You may keep updated on stories via this page or at our site’s News section.
If you are interested in submitting a story showcasing efforts in your country towards rabies elimination, please email [email protected] with “WOAH WRD 2025” in the subject.
