Animal health epidemic intelligence report - Asia and the Pacific - Q2 2026
Incoporating official WAHIS data and active search intelligence
Period covered and objective
Quarterly 2 (Q2) 2026: 1/04/2026 – 30/06/2026
To drive early detection and preparedness across the Asia–Pacific region, this quarterly report provides an update on the animal disease landscape. It achieves this by integrating official data from WAHIS with non-official intelligence gathered through regional active search activities.
Summary of key points
Summary of WAHIS official data
Exceptional events (alert messages sent by WOAH Members): during Q2 2026, 13 exceptional animal disease events were reported. The majority were recurrences of a listed disease (9), with others related to first occurrences in a zone (2), or strain recurrences (2).
Top reported diseases: a total of 355 outbreaks for 12 diseases were reported. Rabies was the most frequent, with 207 outbreaks, followed by HPAI (poultry) (84) and HPAI (non-poultry) (25).
Reporting countries/territories: outbreaks were reported by 15 countries/territories. The most frequent reporters were: Thailand (113 outbreaks), Philippines (76), and Nepal (64).
Summary of epidemic intelligence (active search) findings
News item (information collected through the EIOS system) analysis: during Q2 2026, 8,907 news items were reviewed. Of these, 113 were identified as relevant to WOAH-listed or emerging diseases.
Top news topics: a total of 19 disease were followed, andthree diseases accounted for 69% of all relevant news items: HPAI (30%), ASF (19%), Rabies (19%)
News items by location: News items were detected in 19 countries/territories. The reporting was highly concentrated: three countries/territories accounted for 49% of all news, while the top five countries/territories made up 63% of the total.
Official reports from active search: following 16 communications sent to countries/territories. The communication was related to HPAI, ASF, FMD, leishmaniosis, rabies, West Nile fever, Tilapia lake virus, Perkinsus olseni. Three official reports were received as a direct result of these active search efforts (2 immediate notifications and 1 follow-up reports).
Official information Q2 2026
This section analyses the official information reported during Q2 2026, through the WAHIS system categorising reports by disease and affected country/territory.
The number and percentage of outbreaks reported in Asia-Pacific by disease in Q2 2026 is reported in the table below.
Outbreaks were reported through immediate notifications and follow-up reports by 15 countries/territories in the region. The ones for which reporting was most frequent were Thailand, followed by Philippines, and Nepal. Outbreaks distribution by disease is displayed in the map below
Active search activity Q2 2026
This section analyses the animal health situation in Asia-Pacific for Q2 2026, the trends in news items detections for diseases showing notable changes (increases or decreases). Finally, an analysis on the impact of the activity is provided. News items are presented based on data collected by the Epidemic Intelligence from Open Source EIOS system.
